Elective subject “Environmental Sustainability”

In the 2025/2026 academic year, the University of Maribor introduced and successfully implemented a new elective course, “Environmental Sustainability”, for Master’s students in Chemical Engineering. The course was delivered in December 2025 and January 2026. As part of the GENESIS Erasmus+ project, learning materials were developed to support the green and digital transition. The learning materials were jointly developed by the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, University of Maribor, and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Brno University of Technology.

The course covered key topics in environmental sustainability, life cycle thinking and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), sustainability metrics and environmental systems, as well as circular economy solutions and sustainable technologies. There was a strong emphasis on the application of digital tools and data-driven approaches, including LCA studies using OpenLCA software, carbon footprint minimisation, and ESG reporting.

3rd workshop: Lignocellulosic biorefineries

On 8 and 9 January 2026, the 3rd Workshop on Lignocellulosic Biorefineries was held in Maribor, Slovenia, organised by the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, University of Maribor. The workshop focused on recent advances in the production of bio-based products from lignocellulosic biomass, highlighting circular biomass utilisation, sustainable process integration, environmental impact assessment, and advanced applications of NMR technologies.

The workshop took place within the framework of two projects, VALREO and GENESIS, and brought together research groups from Maribor and Osijek, who are jointly involved in both initiatives. In the context of the GENESIS Erasmus+ project, the event facilitated knowledge exchange on green and digital solutions relevant to modern engineering education.

As part of the programme, participants visited the Lek (Sandoz) pharmaceutical plant in Lendava and held a consortium meeting to discuss upcoming activities, and future opportunities for joint research and collaboration.
